Some Tournament Info!

Websites!!

The tournament is played at the Richmond Convention Center.
403 North 3rd Street, Richmond VA  23219

The tournament website is here.
When browsing the Monument websites, play attention to the info on each page!
You may be on a page that's giving you 2012 info, then on page giving you 2011 info, etc.

Directions to the Richmond Convention Center is here.

Parking

Parking info can be seen here.   I recommend parking in #5.

There is metered parking all around the RCC, but in the past the meters aren't enforced on Saturdays or Sundays!

The tournament website recommends you park in "their" parking garage. Huh.
351 North 3rd Street Richmond, Va. 23219

Admission For 2014
$20 admission for all three days.  $10 admission for one day.

However, we received an email on Nov 5th that said, " Those making a minimum 2-night stay with EM2 Sports will receive free admission." Oh, wow! I think that means that all of the parents who stay in the team hotel will get free admission! Sweeeeet!

There were only two Virginia teams west of Richmond that wanted to participate in this division at the open level! And only one was accepted. It's thrilling! Let's do this!

Richmond Convention Center Rules

Typical Richmond Convention Center Rules.
No outside food is allowed in the RCC......
but some years they have allowed food inside.  Odd.

Coolers are not permitted in the RCC at all......
but they let us to do that some years also.  Really odd.

Normally:  Unattended coolers can not be left outside the RCC
and we are told every year that folding chairs would not be allowed into the facility......
but yet some years, people bring folding chairs in and use them.  I don't understand.

This is from the 2012 Monument City
website....and it hasn't been updated:

  • NO COOLERS of any kind, of any size, or for any reason are permitted in the Greater Richmond Convention  Center. Coolers left inside the building will be removed to the outside of the building. Coolers left outside the building are the sole responsibility of the owner, but may be confiscated if security deems them a hazard.

  • Neither the Richmond Volleyball Club nor the facility will assume any responsibility for coolers or providing a place for them.

  • This is a Greater Richmond Convention Center rule that we must enforce as a condition of our contract. This is not our rule. We understand people do not like this, and neither do we. But we are bound by the terms of the contract and cannot negotiate this away. We apologize for any inconvenience it causes.

  • Any individuals who ignore or verbally abuse the security staff will be asked to immediately leave the premises. Please abide by the rules and let the tournament be enjoyable for everyone.

This was in an email that I got Jan 14.
    More rules for 2014!

The Greater Richmond Convention Center Staff and a Fire Marshall from the City of Richmond will be closely monitoring the aisles, walkways, and spectator areas at Monument City Classic. It is imperative that all individuals comply and stay within the areas assigned as spectator areas, keeping the aisles, alcoves and walkways free. These areas will be clearly marked.

Therefore::
* no players or spectators may sit directly on the convention center floor. If you are sitting, it must be in a chair.
* There will be absolutely no “camping”, player’s bags, team equipment, etc. on the floor in the aisles, walkways, alcoves or spectator areas. Tournament staff will help monitor the areas as well.
* Please understand, if you are asked to move, yourself or items, it is only in the interest of providing a free and clear area as decided by the Greater Richmond Convention Center Staff and Fire Marshall, in case of an emergency.

* Spectators may video BUT you may only use a monopod or a tripod USED AS A MONOPOD.

* We are asking everyone to use common courtesy with the seating area. Please use the chairs ONLY when the participate you are watching is playing and allow other parents/spectators the same courtesy.

* We will have two entrances into the playing venue. One entrance will be the Registration Hall Entrance (the same entrance from previous tournaments) and the second entrance will be at Exhibit Hall D located at the end of the 5th street corridor. Exhibit Hall D will be the closest entrance for teams playing on courts 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 39, 40, & 41.

* Lawn chairs, camping chairs or any type of personal chairs are not permitted inside the playing venue of the Greater Richmond Convention Center. This will assist us in keeping the aisles clear. They are presently still permitted on the carpeted areas of the convention center.

OK, so last year I got this question from a coach at another club:  "Why do so many other teams go to Myrtle Beach and you always take your team to Monument.  And you play in the open division?  Aren't you crazy?"

My answer:   "My team was promised competition vs. "big girls". The girls on my team have big hopes and big dreams. I want to help them with that.  My coaches and I believe that attending the Monument tournament will help them reach those goals better than any other tournament we can attend.   :)"

Coach answered:   "Makes perfect sense. Never been to Myrtle Beach. Just wondered the difference."

"Much different.  There are SO many teams from S.C. to Penn with big dreams and high expectations attending Monument, and they force us to play at the highest level we can possibly play at.  Playing in the open division at Monument will expose every strength and weakness a team has!  :)   "
